The coldest it gets in Florida is maybe 50 degrees. I can wear flip flops with a sweatshirt and be fine throughout the “winter” season. However, up north, winters are slightly colder. Our house doesn’t have central heating; we have baseboard heaters that work to keep us warm. The problem with these is that they run off gas, which can get expensive to purchase.
About a year ago we installed mini splits which are like little air conditioners with heating. We have one in each bedroom, one for the upstairs common area, and one downstairs by the bar/living room. These were helpful in keeping the house warm to an extent, but when it gets down to the teens or single digits, they can’t keep up.
Seeing as we live in the woods, dead trees are a thing. Especially if we drive around after a storm, we will find newly fallen trees all around. We purchased a chainsaw and a log splitter to create our own firewood. The first year we lived here, we had to buy some as the wood was too wet. Now, we have quite the supply of wood in the backyard ready for us to use.
Even if it is 50 degrees outside, a cloudy, rainy day will make our house cold. On those days, I love to make a little fire. I think it is because I didn’t grow up in the north, but I’m so amazed at how fast and easily something this size can warm up a space. One day this past winter we had no power in the middle of the night, and we all slept by the fireplace to stay warm. However, on a normal cold night, my spot is in a recliner right next to the fire.
