I have a pre-teen and a teenager, so they spend most of the time in their worlds when we are home. My pre-teen likes to do various activities, from painting random things to watching YouTube to Legos. My teenager is a video game player like her father and will spend all day playing with her friends online. I love that they are independent girls.
However, on Saturday, the four of us spent all day on our boat together as a family. We made breakfast bagels on our grill, then headed to the river for fishing and swimming. We beached the boat on a little island and got to the fun. The dogs ran around the island while the younger one and I explored. Then we played War and read our books.
Our friends met us out there mid-day, and we stood around talking and joking around. After some time, we all moved to another part of the lake to swim in deeper water. There, we made chicken and shrimp fajitas and watched the beginning of the sunset. My oldest daughter even managed to catch a big bass.
It was one of those days that, on the drive home, you sit in pure bliss. You think about the smiles on the faces of your family that you witnessed over the day. You think about the laughs you shared from the jokes made. You think about the dogs chasing sticks and enjoying the company. You remember the hug you shared as a family before you got off the boat.
After feeling overwhelmed with the people on Friday, Saturday redeemed the weekend for me. It was one of those days you will remember forever and reference on a bad day.
