As the days grow shorter and the air turns crisp, we all know what's on the horizon – winter is coming. For many, this change in season means bundling up and sipping hot cocoa by the fire, but for us, it also means taking special care of our chickens. Keeping them warm and comfortable during the colder months is essential for their well-being, so my husband and I decided to build an enclosure to protect them from the winter chill.
We started by constructing a sturdy wooden frame. To protect our chickens from the elements, we covered the frame with heavy-duty plastic sheeting. This plastic acts as a barrier against wind and rain while allowing natural light to filter through. Knowing that extreme cold could still pose a threat, we installed heat lamps within the enclosure. These lamps would provide additional warmth when needed and help prevent frostbite on chilly nights.
Preparing our chickens for winter is a labor of love. As the snow begins to fall and the temperatures drop, we can rest easy knowing that we've taken the necessary steps to provide our chickens with a safe and warm home. Winter may be coming, but our chickens will be snug as bugs in a rug in their new winter retreat.
