From a story perspective, this book had me completely captivated from the start. It was intoxicating even before the first crime occurred. I experienced this story through the audiobook, so my impressions reflect not only the plot itself but also the delivery.
The narrative is told mostly from Jill’s point of view. When the story shifts to the doll, it moves into third person, and those sections were genuinely creepy and unsettling in the best way. The level of detail was so vivid that you could clearly picture exactly what was happening. Some of the descriptions and similes were so intense that I actually had to stop what I was doing just to listen.
At its core, this is a mystery, but Jill is also an author trying to solve it alongside the reader. She is smart and capable, and the way her mind works was fascinating to follow. Watching her piece everything together made the story even more engaging.
While some elements were expected, there was a twist I absolutely did not see coming. I was left sitting there with my mouth open in shock. I loved it, and overall this is a story I’m really glad I picked up.
The audiobook narration was fantastic. Stephanie brought so much life to the story with distinct voices for each character. I always knew who was speaking thanks to the different accents and inflections, and Darla’s voice in particular was pitch-perfect based on how I envisioned her. This is absolutely a story where the audiobook elevates the experience. I received this as an ALC and a leaving honest review voluntarily.
I'm going to remember every second of this night for the rest of my life.
