Lark has lived with this curse for years, and you can feel the toll it’s taken on her. Despite that, she does everything she can to keep her life steady and her shop running. There’s something so admirable about the way she holds everything together, even when it would be easier to let it all fall apart. She’s willing to manage her magic, her emotions, and everything in between just to protect what she’s built.
Aurelian enters the story with a very clear grumpy attitude and makes it known he does not want to be there. But early on, there’s a moment where he realizes that if he hadn’t been there, someone else would have been in his place… and the fact that it bothers him says everything. You can see, almost immediately, how much Lark begins to affect him, even as someone so calculated, cold, and controlled.
There are so many things I loved about this book that I can’t fully get into without spoiling it. But the chemistry between Lark and Aurelian is undeniable. It builds steadily, creating a strong foundation that makes everything between them feel earned. And what their relationship becomes? It’s even better than I expected.
Lark’s family and friends add so much to the story. They bring humor, purpose, and warmth to every scene they’re in. Aurelian, on the other hand, starts with very little, which makes the connections he forms feel even more meaningful. His realization toward the end was such a satisfying moment and honestly made my heart so happy for him.
Overall, this story weaves together a lingering curse, a slow-building love, and the kind of friendships that make everything feel whole. It’s emotional, layered, and quietly powerful. I received this story as an ARC and am leaving this honest review voluntarily.
Hope is a dangerous thing. But for the the first time, it doesn't feel forbidden. It feels earned.
