After reading the blurb, I knew this story sounded unique — and it absolutely was. This book is different in the best possible way.
The concept is so original, at least unlike anything I’ve ever read, that I was hooked immediately. The journey these two main characters take is wild, intense, and completely consuming. Even though it ends on a cliffhanger, everything they endure along the way is indescribable and worth every page.
Cairo is inexperienced, but she isn’t naive or sheltered. She sees herself in the harshest light, and following her interactions with Rocco is both heartbreaking and beautiful. The back-and-forth between them hurts, but watching her slowly gain confidence is incredibly rewarding.
Rocco is deeply cynical, and you understand why very early on. His internal conflict is written so well — he wants to protect Cairo, even when it costs him emotionally. He’s torn between stepping back and letting her in, and that tension is the sweetest, most self-punishing thing about him. He recognizes the connection between them, but he’s stuck in this push-and-pull spiral that feels so real.
Cairo is wonderful, but Rocco’s internal struggle is what truly makes this book shine. Even when Cairo doesn’t understand him, the reader does — and you feel every bit of what he’s carrying.
Now comes the torture…waiting for the next book to see where their story goes next.
Somehow, she is making my pain go away
